What is a Slot?

The word “slot” dates back to the late 14th century and refers to a hollow on the throat above the breastbone. The word is derived from the Old French esclot, of uncertain origin, and is a synonym of the Old Norse slod. Its modern meaning as a slot machine first appeared in 1888. Despite its ancient origins, the word has undergone several changes throughout its history.

Today, slots are typically played for credits instead of real money. The most common method of paying out winnings in slots is to activate a lever or push a button. The slot machine then spins its reels and pays credits based on a paytable. The symbols used in slot games vary, but common ones include fruits, bells, and stylized lucky sevens. The symbols in each slot game are named for their theme. This theme determines which symbols will appear on the player’s reel.

The Dialog Engine recognizes discrete pieces of information from utterances, known as slots. Each slot has a corresponding Slot Type. A Slot Type defines what information is searched for and how it should be processed. Once a Slot is created, it can be edited or deleted. If you need to edit or delete a Slot, you can do so on the Slots tab. If you’re unsure about the type of information that is needed, you can use a regular expression to identify it.

The word “slot” is derived from the Middle Dutch and Low German languages. Its synonyms are Old Norse slot, Old High German sloz, Old Saxon slut, and Old Frisian slut. The root of the word “slot” is *slut–to close. It is related to the PIE root *klau–“hook.”
