The Legality of Online Gambling

Online Gambling is playing games of chance or skill for money on the internet. It includes virtual poker, sports betting, casinos, and lotteries. You can gamble on any device with an Internet connection.

The first online gambling venue for the general public was the Liechtenstein International Lottery. The Internet has brought gambling a long way since then, but there are still some hurdles to clear before you can start winning big.

The United States has a number of laws regulating gambling. Some states have passed their own gambling restrictions, but Congress has also imposed a number of federal limitations on the industry.

For example, Congress has prohibited the unauthorized transportation of lottery tickets between states. In addition, Congress has regulated the legality of Native American land-based gambling. Likewise, it has established a few stipulations about offline gambling.

There have been some recent cases involving the legality of online gambling. One of the more notable is United States v. Nicolaou, a 4th Circuit decision. This case involved five individuals who bet on a game of poker at all times during a thirty day period.

Another instance involves the UIGEA. A federal law prohibits financial transaction providers from participating in illegal Internet bets. PayPal is one such company.

While the UIGEA is a law mainly affecting financial institutions, the laws regulating the legality of online gambling are mostly at the state level. Several states are concerned about the threat of allowing illegal gambling on their territories.
